Treat yourself to a gluten free apple crumble

Baking is not a thing of the past with gluten free sweets. You just need to be clever with substitutes.

The crumble is so easy to make. There is no pastry crust to worry about spending time on like you have to do with an apple pie.

I just sprayed an oven proof casserole with Pam cooking spray and then piled on the sliced apples that had been mixed with the light brown sugar, Stevia in the raw, cinnamon and a pinch of Kosher salt.

Using half Stevia and half brown sugar in both the apples and the crumble also cuts down the calories considerably without sacrificing the taste of the apple crisp.Gluten Free Apple Crumble - Tasty GF Apple Crisp Recipe (2)

Once the apples have been added, the next step is top make the crumble topping.

What makes this crumble topping gluten free?

Normal crumble toppings use wheat flour which is a no-no on a gluten free diet.

To make this crumble topping gluten free I used rolled oats marked gluten free, and mixed them with butter, brown sugar, Stevia and oat flour.

Oat flour is a nutritious grain flour made from oats which offers a mildly nutty flavor. You can purchase it from health food stores or Amazon, or make your own by grinding gluten free oats.

I made my gluten free crumble topping in a food processor, but you can just as easily use a pastry cutter or fork and a big bowl.Gluten Free Apple Crumble - Tasty GF Apple Crisp Recipe (3)

Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples, and make sure it covers the pan well. I usually spray any baked item like this with Pam before I bake it to get it a nice golden brown topping.

The GF apple crumble is delicious both warm or cold. When I serve it cold, I sometimes top it with a warm custard.

When I serve it warm, the flavor is great served with whipped topping or a scoop of ice cream or sorbet. Who says you can’t have pastry type dishes on a gluten free diet? Not me!
